Corporate social responsibility policy

Our commitment to the community, businesses, and the arts

We have always been dedicated to charitable causes, involvement with, and commitment to the local community. Our engagement within the local community supports local organisations and ensures jobs are maintained. Our volunteering efforts, Trustee and committee memberships and dedication to providing our services and facilities to local organisations and charities allows them to benefit from expertise that they would otherwise have to pay for.

The following information has been taken from the firm’s CSR policy and only highlights the work we do in the local community.

Commitment to Charity

In June 2011, we launched its Charity and Social Committee to organise social and fundraising events with the aim of raising money for charity. We are committed to supporting charities, the local community and local disadvantaged groups. The Committee was a management initiative, and has the support and commitment of all staff.

The Committee organises regular fundraising events to raise money for charity, and this year, has elected Sobell House, a local charity that provides end of life care, and The Alzheimer's Society as its charities of the year.

As well as the firm’s efforts, we have many members arranging their own fundraising challenges and activities to raise money for charity. A recent example includes our Sarah Foster, Managing Partner, who recently completed an Ironman in Austria. Her efforts raised over £3,735 for Cancer Research UK.

Commitment to Volunteering

Seven of our solicitors, are on the Oxford Citizens Advice Bureau rota providing free legal advice to those who might not otherwise have access to legal services.

Commitment to the Arts

We are committed to the arts and supports Oxford institutions such as the Ashmolean Museum and Oxford Playhouse.

The firm continues to be a corporate partner of the award-winning Ashmolean Museum. The firm’s relationship with the museum started in 2006 with the sponsorship of the treasures exhibition. As a direct result, the firm was awarded the Arts & Business Southeast Brand Identity Award in 2007.

Oxford Playhouse is one of Britain’s most respected theatres that generate huge support for up-and- coming playwrights. We have an integrated relationship with the Playhouse and regularly sponsor the theatre's productions.

We have also set up and/or been the Trustee of several musical charities, including an opera centre and a youth orchestra.

Commitment to Sports

The firm is committed to sports and benefiting the local community. We are club sponsors of Oxford Rugby Football Club and title sponsor of the annual Junior Tennis Tournament in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The tournament is now highly respected and continues to showcase young tennis talent in the county.

The firm is also proud to be the key sponsor of Oxford Cricket Club.

Commitment to Enterprise and Business

We are a founding member of Responsible Oxford Business Involvement Network (‘ROBIN’) which is working to build links between local businesses and charities, and one of our consultants is a member of the steering events group.  As well as volunteering and sponsorship, ROBIN encourages a wide range of initiatives such as work placements and skills and equipment sharing.

One of our partners is a Trustee of Aspire Oxford, a local charity that was established to change the lives of the most disadvantaged of our society. The charity provides work in Oxfordshire for the people they help, giving them skills and training and teaching them how to apply those skills in real working practices.

Commitment to Education and Youth

We have established a work experience program with Woodstock’s Marlborough school which allows students insight into a career in law.  We also accommodate legal undergraduates on work experience schemes where we can, gaining them valuable experience to add to their CV in a competitive market.

The firm is an active supporter and promoter of enterprise in young people. One of our partners has advised and acted as mentor to Young Enterprise Companies. A charity that provides school children with the invaluable experience of setting up a company and starting a business.

One of our private client solicitors is a Trustee of the Elizabeth Casson Trust, which was established to support the training and development of Occupational Therapists, awarding individuals with grants to enable them to continue their professional development. The trust also funds research projects undertaken by Occupational Therapists and supports the Occupational Therapy department at Oxford Brookes University. He joined the Trustees to provide a more rounded Trustee body and comments on legal and financial matters.

Diversity is about valuing the differences between people as individuals and the recognition of their potential and contribution.  Within this principle, we believe that a culture that focuses on the individual must strive to eliminate prejudice and unfair treatment ensuring equal treatment for all staff.

Diversity and equality must work in partnership in order to provide an environment that fosters performance and creativity.  We hope a fairer more responsive working environment will be developed for everybody and not only for the under-represented groups whose needs we address by providing points of reference within the equal opportunities code of practice.  In addition, we hope that by embracing the principal of diversity our people management processes and practices will lead to initiatives that seek to balance home and work life, and provide work and career opportunities to a more diverse pool of talent.

Equal opportunities - a code of practice

The firm is committed to provide equal opportunities in employment.  This means that all job applicants and employees will receive equal treatment regardless of race or national origins, beliefs, sexual orientation, age, or disability.  It is good business sense for the firm to ensure that its most important resource, its staff, is utilised in a fair and effective way.
